Despite its famously turbulent launch back in 2020, CD Projekt Red’s sci-fi epic Cyberpunk 2077 has officially crossed a monumental milestone, surpassing 40 million copies sold worldwide.

The developer announced the news today via the game’s official X (formerly Twitter) account, sharing a promotional image with the bold proclamation: "40 million copies sold." Fine print on the announcement confirms the total is accurate as of July 3, 2026, counting both standalone sales of the base game and the Ultimate Edition bundle.

From A Rocky Launch To Critical Redemption

The 40-million mark is a testament to one of the most fascinating redemption arcs in gaming history. While the game was praised at launch by critics for its cinematic scope—with VGC’s Andy Robinson calling it "an immersive and stunningly crafted RPG that has raised the bar for cinematic quality"—it was plagued by severe technical issues on last-gen consoles that severely damaged the studio's reputation.

Reflecting on that troubled period, CD Projekt Red co-CEO Michał Nowakowski recently admitted the team still has work to do to fully regain player trust:

"I’m convinced that we lost the faith of some people indefinitely, and that’s a fair thing. But I do hope we will be able to make it back – if not with The Witcher 4, then with whatever comes next."

The turning point for the franchise arrived in September 2023 with the release of the Phantom Liberty expansion and the game-changing 2.0 update. The overhaul was a massive success, with critics noting it made the game heavily worth a second chance. The strategy clearly paid off: Phantom Liberty alone crossed 10 million units sold as of CD Projekt's Q1 2025 earnings report, acting as a massive catalyst to push the base game to its current 40 million milestone.

Corporate Shifts and Future Outlook

The sales milestone arrives during a period of structural evolution for the company. In late June 2026, parent company CD Projekt announced it would officially change its name to CD Projekt Red to seamlessly align the corporate brand with its famous development studio.

Nearly six years after its original release, Night City's cultural footprint isn't fading anytime soon. Beyond the massive game sales, the franchise is preparing for another major pop-culture push with a highly anticipated new Cyberpunk: Edgerunners anime project slated for release in Fall 2026.
